Abstract

Many students have difficulty with problem solving in math. Not only do they lack the experience to attack problems that require independent thinking and judgment, but they also find it hard to express their results through whole group discussion. This mixed methods case study explores the use of daily problem solving to improve mathematical reasoning and discourse. Over a four week period, algebraic thinking problems were introduced as a part of the mathematics block, and student-led classroom discussions, with teacher support, were used to come to a consensus on answers. Pre and post tests were given that showed highly statistically significant gains in both problem solving as well as articulation.
